Broad Objectives

 PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy of Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing Education in Nigeria takes cognizance of the importance of the preservation of human, integrity and individuality. In developing curriculum, the Nursing & Midwifery Council of Nigeria in conjunction with the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital Management, Yaba, believe that:-
1. Man is a complex biopsycho-social, cultural and spiritual being, whose behavioural patterns develop from genetic inheritance and interaction with the environment.
2. Health is a changing biopsycho-social and spiritual level of wellness, which the client/ patient is assisted to maintain through the utilization of the nursing process.
3. Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing education is an applied science that employs the intellectual, inter-personal and professional skills of the nurse to assist clients in achieving maximum mental health.
4. Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing education enables the nurse to develop specialized skills in mental health/ psychiatric nursing. It also encourage continuous refinement of practice by updating self with current literatures and by attending continuing education programmes and seminars.
5. Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing practice embraces the tenets of Primary Health Care in all its ramifications.
6. Mental Health-Psychiatric Nursing practice owes it a duty to preserve the patient’s dignity, restoring his self-esteem, his independence and also protect him from illegal exploitation, irrespective of race, age, sex, culture, religion, status or nature of ailment and to ensure a psychological built up of confidence within the patients and relatives.


AT THE END OF THE PROGRAMME
The student will be able to;
1. Utilize the Nursing process in providing comprehensive mental health nursing care to individuals and families in primary, secondary and tertiary care settings.
2. Provide a therapeutic environment conducive to reconciliation and incorporation of the client/ patient to the social norms of the community through inter-sectoral team approach.
3. Provide a safe physical setting which minimizes the pathological stress related to illness.
4. Create an atmosphere of trust which allows for meeting the clients’/ patients’ basic emotional needs.
5. Encourage individuals to establish opportunities for self-expression, self-acceptance and self-evaluation which will enable the acceptance of responsibilities commensurate with changing capacities.
6. Assist in providing the necessary corrective experiences for the redirection of negative behaviours to achieve personal growth.
7. Display tolerance in accepting maladaptive behaviour of the client/ patient.
